On our way home from Nigeria we stopped in London to be tourists for a couple days. It was so refreshing to eat familiar food, have a hot shower, and stretch our legs before the long flight home. London is a special place for both Mike + I. It is in fact the place that Mike proposed + the place I said “YES”. I think our proposal story is pretty rad + thought it would be fun to share it with you all…
Mike and I had been dating for almost a year when my mom + I took a trip to Mozambique to work in an orphanage with Iris Ministries. It was an unforgettable trip! On our LONG journey back to Canada we had a lay-over in London for a few hours. I was exhausted and would have preferred to stay at the airport and sleep but my mom was keen on meeting up with our friend Andy for a quick coffee. She was a little stressed as she was unable to contact him on his cell phone. She probably tried calling a handful of times to confirm our meet-up and was SO relieved when he finally answered the phone. We jumped on the tube and headed towards the Tower Bridge. Not gonna lie, I was a little on the grumpy side. Once we arrived at the bridge I sat down in exhaustion, as my mom scurried off to look for Andy. Within a couple minutes I saw my mom motioning me to join her. I reluctantly picked myself off the ground and slowly walked towards my mom, who had already disappeared behind one of the towers. When I turned the corner it wasn’t ‘Andy’ I saw but in fact Mike. I don’t remember much after that but I do recall hitting him…not sure why this was my first reaction! He got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him…and of course I said YES! After some tears, hugs + kisses we had to rush back to the airport to catch our plane home. Originally Mike was not on our flight but after the ticket lady heard our story she pulled some strings and got him a seat! What a sweet lady :) It was really fun to hear my mom + Mike’s side of the story on our way home. He apparently asked my dad for permission to marry me after they had dropped us off at the airport. Mike had the bright idea to propose in an unexpected location, and at an unexpected time to make sure I was 100% surprised! And that I was! How he pulled it off really was a miracle. He was communicating/planning with my mom in Mozambique where electricity and internet was sporadic and unreliable. Mike took a risk flying to London as there was no guarantee that he would even be able to connect with us…BUT thankfully everything worked out! Mike could not have picked a more perfect way to propose…we both Love to travel and Mike is never one to do anything ordinary :) His side of the story is pretty entertaining…you’ll have to ask him sometime!
Here are some of our favorite photos from the few short days we spent in London…this time as a married couple!
This is the exact place Mike proposed…we had to revisit the spot and take a mock photo for fun :)
